L’exposition Modern Congo, 1930-1960 à la galerie Magnin-A exposera une cinquantaine de peintures d’artistes congolais. Elle est remarquable à plus d’un titre.

Les œuvres ont été scrupuleusement choisies pour dévoiler un ensemble cohérent de pièces parmi les plus puissantes créées au Congo au début du 20ème siècle. Une proposition de 50 œuvres historiques, certaines présentées dès les années 30 aux musées de Bruxelles, Genève et Rome puis dans de grandes expositions internationales (Africa Explores, 20th Century of African Art, New York, The center for African Art, 1991 ; Beauté Congo 1926-2015 Congo Kitoko, Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain, Paris, France, 2015 ; The Milk of Dreams, 59ème Biennale de Venise, Pavillon Central, 2022) et d’autres pour la première fois accessibles au public. Issues de collections privées prestigieuses (Collection Gaston-Denys Périer, Collection Dierickx, Collection Eric Kawan, Collection Albert Cochaux, Collection Pierre Loos…) et reproduites dans plusieurs publications historiques, ces œuvres rares, longtemps ignorées mais qui avaient fasciné des collectionneurs visionnaires, sont pour la première fois réunies en galerie dans une scénographie aussi délicate que ces peintures sont exceptionnelles.

Modern Congo, 1930-1960 exhibition at Galerie Magnin-A will feature some fifty paintings by Congolese artists. It is remarkable in more ways than one.

The works have been scrupulously chosen to reveal a coherent ensemble of some of the most powerful pieces created in the Congo at the beginning of the 20th century. The exhibition features 50 historic works, some of which have been shown since the 1930s in museums in Brussels, Geneva and Rome, and later in major international exhibitions (Africa Explores, 20th Century of African Art, New York, The Center for African Art, 1991; Beauté Congo 1926-2015 Congo Kitoko, Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain, Paris, France, 2015; The Milk of Dreams, 59th Venice Biennale, Pavillon Central, 2022), while others are accessible to the public for the first time. From prestigious private collections (Collection Gaston-Denys Périer, Collection Dierickx, Collection Eric Kawan, Collection Albert Cochaux, Collection Pierre Loos...) and reproduced in several historical publications, these rare works, long ignored but which had fascinated visionary collectors, are for the first time reunited in a gallery in a scenography as delicate as these paintings are exceptional.
